Expert advice on making curtains
Avoid the common pitfalls when making curtains by following these six tips, from Good Housekeeping
● When you're estimating quantities for curtains or loose covers, don't forget to allow for pattern repeats. Even random designs may have some underlying order - stand back and check all the lines of the pattern.
● Centre the pattern for each curtain, then match all the widths for each window against it.
● To check the direction of the pattern, look at the selvedge. There may be directional arrows to guide you. With floral designs, think about the natural way plants grow.
● Parallel or horizontal lines on fabric need to be aligned with the walls and ceiling rather than furniture.
● If the fabric is washable, allow for 10% shrinkage and wash it before making up the curtains. If you're buying ready-made curtains, allow 5% extra for shrinkage.
● Check your fabric is fade-resistant and always line curtains to protect the top fabric from sunlight, dust, dirt and condensation.
