Create a cross-stitch heart cushion cover: free sewing pattern

cross-stitch heart cushion to sew

For the cushion cover

Cut two fabric rectangles 33cm x 43cm for the cushion back and one square 43cm x 43cm for the front. Cut an 18cm x 18cm square of Aida.

Follow the chart below and cross-stitch the heart on to the Aida, working over two threads for each stitch. Press under 1cm all the way around. Pin and stitch the Aida patch to centre of cushion front. Sew a shell button on to each corner.

Press under and stitch a 1.5cm hem across one long edge of each cushion back. With right sides together, lay backs on top of cushion front so hemmed edges overlap.

Pin and stitch around outer edge, taking 1.5cm seam allowance. Trim seam allowances to 5mm and neaten seams. Turn right side out and press. Insert a 40cm x 40cm cushion pad.

Guide to cross-stitch

Cross-stitch is worked following a design from a chart on to even-weave fabric, by counting the threads in the fabric to position the stitches accurately. It can be worked from left to right or vice versa – the top diagonals of each cross should slant in the same direction throughout. We used two strands of DMC embroidery thread in Red 321 and 18-count Aida fabric.
