Make a vibrant Christmas wreath

If you can't face those same old gold, red and green Christmas decorations again this year, why not choose a bold and beautiful colour scheme instead?
Vibrant, fun and fabulously festive, this jewel-coloured contemporary wreath will take you from Christmas into the New Year party season.

You will need

• 14in foam wreath ring
• A selection of Christmas foliage including spruce and holly
• Red cordyline
• Green hypericum berries
• Cerise mini gerbera
• Orange carnations
• Green pine cone picks
• A selection of mini baubles
• Dried oranges
• Vibrant ribbon
• Florist's wire, scissors, skewers and a stapler

Create a hoop from which to hang your wreath. To do this, make a loop of florist’s wire or strong twine and attach securely to the back of the foam wreath.
Tip: When working on your wreath, remember that this will be the top of the design.

Immerse the foam ring in water until completely soaked, then place on a protected work surface.

Using a pair of sharp scissors, cut off sprigs of spruce approximately 7 inches in length, then frame the wreath foam with the spruce, inserting each sprig at a slight angle. We recommend removing at least an inch of pine needles at the
stem so that you can push the spruce easily into the foam (image 1).
Tip: Work clockwise around the wreath, ensuring each sprig is inserted at the same angle to maintain a circular shape and flow to the design.

Repeat with the holly and green hypericum berries until the surface of the wreath is covered and there are no gaps where the foam is visible.

Cut the pine cone picks short and insert them into the wreath (image2).
Tip: Pine cone picks are readily available at most Interflora florist's shops at this time of year. However you can make your own: gather fallen cones from the garden, spray-paint them, or leave them natural, and secure in place with florist's wire.

Next, using skewers insert the dried oranges into the foam at an angle.

Thread miniature baubles on to strong wire and twist to group them together, then insert into the wreath (image 3).

Next, cut the gerbera, orchid and carnation stems at an angle and insert into the foam evenly around the wreath. Try grouping clusters of two or three flowers together for visual impact.
Tip: Gerberas and carnations are available in a wide range of colours so why not be daring and go for shades of lime green, hot pink and zesty orange?

Loop the cordyline leaves in your hands, secure with a staple and push into the foam (images 4 and 5).

To complete the look, create a bow using vibrant, coloured ribbon and again secure into place at the bottom of the wreath using florist’s wire.
Tip: Keep your garland looking fresh by regularly misting it with water. If kept in the right conditions the flowers and foliage should be long lasting, however you can always replace any that look past their best.
