You will need

● 1 rectangle of red gingham 33cm x 43cm, for front
● 1 rectangle of red gingham 33cm x 45cm, for back
● Assorted ribbons (2.5cm and 1.5cm wide)
● Snap fastener for opening
● 40cm x 30cm cushion filler

To make

Cut two lengths of 2.5cm-wide ribbon to fit the cushion from side to side and top to bottom. Cut two 1.5cm-wide ribbons the same length as these to stitch on top. Then cut two lengths of contrasting ribbon to fit diagonally across the cushion front.

Lay the wider ribbon on the front of the cushion fabric in a cross shape and pin in position. Using a sewing machine, topstitch in place. Lay the narrow ribbon on top of this and topstitch in place. Then place the remaining ribbon to form a diagonal cross on the cushion front, pin in place and stitch in position.

Cut out the cushion back fabric into two oblongs measuring 33cm by 22.5cm. With right sides facing, start sewing the longer sides of the fabric together, with a 5cm seam allowance. Sew about 5cm from each end leaving a gap for inserting the cushion pad. Press both seams to one side.

With right sides facing, stitch the backing to the cushion front around all four edges. Trim and notch the corners with sharp scissors.

Turn to right side and stitch on a snap fastening to the back opening. Insert cushion filler to finish.
