Sew an alphabet quilt: free sewing pattern

Sew an alphabet quilt - free sewing patterns UK - craft - allaboutyou.com

You will need

● 6 squares of white linen fabric 30cm x 30cm
● 6 squares of oatmeal linen fabric 30cm x 30cm
● 30cm oatmeal linen fabric (at least 137cm wide)
● 60cm Bondaweb for letters
● 1.3m fabric for backing (137cm wide)
● 1.3m cotton interlining (137cm wide)

To make

Iron the Bondaweb to the back of the 30cm strip of oatmeal linen fabric and leave to cool.

Print out and enlarge the letter templates A to F (below) to about 18cm to 20cm tall. Draw around the letters on the back of the Bondaweb backing paper, making sure you draw the letters in reverse. Cut out carefully and peel off the backing paper.

Place a letter in the centre of each white linen square, iron onto the fabric and leave to cool. Work around each letter using a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine and white sewing thread.

With right sides facing, join the squares together, using alternate oatmeal and white linen squares in rows of three. Allow approximately 1cm for seams all round. The first row will have the A square in the middle; place B and C in the second row with an oatmeal square in the middle, D in the middle of the third row, and E and F in the fourth row.

When you have sewn four rows of three squares, notch the edges and iron the seams flat. Stitch the four rows of squares together, right sides facing, making sure they are in the correct alphabetical order, notch the edges and iron seams flat.

Cut the interlining to fit the fabric and then trim off 1.5cm from all edges. Place the interlining on the back of the quilt and pin in place. Fold over all the edges to the inside and tack in place.

Cut the backing fabric to the same size as the quilt. Pin to the back of the quilt and fold edges to the inside approximately 2cm. Handstitch the fabric using whipping stitch to finish.
