You need:

● Cotton fabric – 60cm x width of roll
● 1cm wide elastic- 25cm
● 0.5m of cotton tape or cord for the drawstring hanging loop
● A safety pin

(Seam allowance is 1cm unless otherwise stated)

Cutting out

Cut out one rectangle of fabric measuring 60cm long by 44cm wide.

Stitch the side seam

Fold your rectangle in half so that the longest edges are matching.

Pin together and straight stitch – leaving a 2cm gap in the stitching 5cm from the top edge and a 2cm gap in the stitching 5cm from the bottom of the seam. (eg, you will have straight stitching for 5cm, then a 2cm gap in the stitching, and then stitching down to 7cm above the bottom edge, then a 2cm gap, then staight stitching down to the bottom).

The gaps are there so that you can insert the drawstring and the elastic.

Zigzag or overlock the raw edges (remembering to leave gaps in the stitching).

Stitching the top and bottom casings

Keeping the bag holder inside out, fold over the top edge by 1cm.

Now fold that same edge over again by 4cm.

With a hot iron, press into place.

Using straight stitch, sew 0.5cm from the folded-in edge so the casing sits securely in place.

Repeat these steps at the other end of the bag holder.

Turn your bag holder the right way round.

Inserting the drawstring

Take your piece of cotton tape or cordage and insert the safety pin through one end.

Carefully insert the safety pin into the gap you left at the top and thread the drawstring through the casing until you’re back where you started.

Remove the safety pin and knot the ends of the drawstring securely together – this will pull your casing together and act as a hook for hanging your holder.

Inserting the elastic

Using the same method, thread your elastic through the bottom casing. Knot or stitch the ends of the elastic together, so it’s loose enough to push bags into the holder, but tight enough to keep them from falling out.

Hang it on a hook and you’re done.
